“no.” a laugh escapes her — dry, brittle, heavy with disbelief. because it’s a JOKE. it had to be a joke. her mom was home. in virginia. miles and miles and lifetimes away from here and she couldn’t possibly be… caroline studied him. the tone of his voice, the look in his eyes. her throat went dry, another laugh pushing out in place of a sob. he was kidding. he had to be kidding. her mom couldn’t be dead, her mom was all she had left. “my mom’s at home.” she protested, brows knitting together. “in virginia. you’re WRONG.”

Thomas  says  nothing,  but  holds  the  telegram  out  to  her,  raised  brows  &&  nod  being  given.  it  wasn’t  uncommon  for  him  to  break  such  bad  news,  people  died  in  his  employment,  the  risks  of  the  crime  life  style.  ‘ it  was  a  PEACEFUL  way  to  go.  died  in  her  sleep.  consolation  was  never  something  he  had  been  good  with.  death  of  those  who  shared  no  blood  hardly  phased  him.

whispered

❛ Are you being serious right now? ❜

cold  eyes  locked  in  deadpan  stare  with the  younger,  fingers  clutching  the  TELEGRAM  loosely  in  his  hand.   do  I  look  like  the  kind’ve  man  to  joke  about  this ??  for  once  his  tone  toward  her  was  gentle,  aim  to  break  news  with  as  much  sympathy  as  he  could  muster,  even  if  he  cared  little.   your  mother  is  dead,  Caroline.  he  did  WARN  HER  that  being  seen  around  his  family  had  it’s  consequences.

whispered

❛ Can I stay here for the night? ❜

had  it  not  been  raining,  he  would  have  said  NO.  he  wasn’t  running  a  fucking  B&B,  were  there  no  friends  near  by  that  could  shelter  her  for  the  night ??  with  pursed  lips,  the  gangster  opened  the  door  wider  so  she  could  enter.  she  looked  pathetic.  blonde  hair  clinging  to  shivering  form,  how  could  he  slam  the  door  in  her  face  when  she  looked  like  that ??

bathroom’s  upstairs,  second  door  on  the  right.  should  be  fresh  towels  in  there.  Ada’s  old  room  is  across  the  hall,  some’ve  her  clothes  should  fit  you.  when  you’re  done  we’ll  be  havin’  a  talk  ‘bout  this.

whispered

❛ that knife is filthy. ❜

‘ that  tends  to  happen  if  a  knife  is  left  outside  in  the pourin’  rain.  begins  to  rust  &&  gather  whatever’s  on  the  ground  onto  the  steel.  John  probably  left  it  out,  as  he  does  most  things.
